Thought leader interview with Steve Coffey

What will be the biggest issue you hope to hear more on at Housing 2022?

There are many issues, however, they all lead to the impact of the Cost of Living Crisis. That will shape the prism through which all other issues will be considered.

What will you be speaking about in your session?

What does Levelling Up mean for housing.

Whilst housing is not mentioned as often as it should be in the Levelling Up White Paper, I will be focusing on the contribution that housing can make across all of the missions included in it - it can, and should, be a major contribution if the aspirations are to be achieved.

Tell us a question for the Secretary of State?

If LU is to be successful it needs more than the traditional levers to be pulled. How open is the Govt to fiscal and other measures to drive a win/win? Also, will you promote a consensus on a non-partisan long term investment strategy like Germany?

What are you most looking forward to?

Seeing how we can address the Cost of Living Crisis whilst focusing on long term change through investment in the Net Zero agenda.

Name the housing speaker of your dreams and why?

I am working on the assumption that it can be someone who is alive or dead so:

William Beveridge. Much of the ’post war consensus’ was based upon his work and i feel that we new a new ’post Covid, post financial crisis and post Brexit’ consensus that creates a more equal society as envisaged by him.

Why is it vital the whole sector has a place to meet each year?

Whilst there are many issues that need our immediate attention on a day-to-day level, we need to discuss the key issues of the day as a sector. This will facilitate consensus, generate ideas and help hold each other to account.
